72nd Republic Day highlights
72nd Republic Day Parade was held at Rajpath in New Delhi on 26 January 2021. President of India presides over Republic Day parade held every year at Rajpath in New Delhi.
72nd Republic Day Parade 2021 was held without the presence of a foreign Head of State or Head of Government as the Chief Guest. Earlier, Republic Day parades in 1952, 1953 and 1966 were also held without the presence of any foreign dignitary.
Highlights of 72nd Republic Day Parade
- Contingent march at 72nd Republic Day Parade was led by contingent of army, air force and navy of Bangladesh.
- Lieutenant General Vijay Kumar Mishra was Parade Commander for 72nd Republic Day Parade.
- 61 Cavalry, the only active serving horse cavalry regiment in the world, was the first domestic contingent at 72nd Republic Day Parade.
- Lieutenant Commander Lalit Kumar was Contingent Commander of Naval contingent. Naval Tableau was titled ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’.

Flight Lieutenant Tanik Sharma led the Air Force contingent. Air Force Tableau titled ‘Indian Air Force: Touch the Sky with Glory’.
- Delhi Police has won the ‘Best marching contingent’ award among CAPF and other auxiliary forces.
- Jat Regiment has been selected for the best marching contingent award in the Armed Forces category.

Tableaux during 72nd Republic Day Parade
Bajasal folk dance was performed during 72nd Republic Day Parade at Rajpath this year. Bajasal is a beautiful folk dance of Kalahandi, Odisha. DRDO tableau depicted Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) - Navy - Take off from INS Vikramaditya, Nag and HELINA. Important themes of tableau from states are given next.

The tableau of UT of Ladakh was displayed for the first time in the Republic Day Parade. It highlighted the Vision for Ladakh to be carbon neutral.
The Indian Astronomical Observatory located in Hanle near Leh, one of the world’s highest sites for optical, infrared and gamma-ray telescopes, was also featured in the tableau.
Best Tableau During 72nd Republic Day Parade
Uttar Pradesh won the best tableau award followed by Tripura. The theme of UP’s tableau was ‘Ayodhya: Cultural Heritage of Uttar Pradesh’. Uttarakhand’s tableau on the theme ‘Dev Bhoomi- The Land of Gods’ bagged the third position.
The tableau of CPWD won the special prize for paying tribute to the martyrs of armed forces. Its theme was ‘Amar Jawan’.

Fly Past During Republic Day Parade
Fly Past: Republic Day Parades end with a fly past by Indian Air Force fighter jets. The constituents of fly past at 72nd Republic Day Parade are given below.
- Rudra formation by Dakota aircraft and two Mi-17 IV helicopters and Sudarshan formation by Chinook and two Mi-17 IV Helicopters.
- Rakshak attack helicopter formation by Mi-35 helicopter & Apache helicopters and Bhim formation by C-130J aircraft.
- Netra, the ‘Eye in the Sky’: It is an indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft indigenously designed and developed by DRDO.
- Garuda formation by C-17 Globemaster with two MiG-29s & two Su-30 MKI aircraft
- Eklavya formation by Rafale jet with two Jaguar Deep penetration strike aircraft and two MiG-29 Air Superiority Fighters
- Trinetra formation by Su-30MKIs and Vertical Charlie formation by single Rafale fighter jet
