List of Home Ministers of India


The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is a ministry of the Government of India. The Ministry is headed by a Cabinet-ranked Minister who reports directly to the Prime Minister. The Home Minister is responsible for maintaining internal security and domestic policy.

Home Secretary is the administrative head of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Chiefs of CAPFs, NIA, and IB report directly to the Home Minister. The Union Home Secretary gives advice to Union Home Minister on matters of policy formation.

Responsibilities of Home Minister of India

The Home Minister of India is responsible for maintaining law and order, internal security, and domestic policy within the country.

Internal Security

The Home Minister is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of citizens within the country. This includes the maintenance of law and order and the prevention and control of communal and sectarian violence.

Border Management

The Home Minister oversees the management of India's international borders, including border security, immigration, and the prevention of smuggling and illegal border crossings.

Police

The Ministry of Home Affairs oversees the Indian Police Service (IPS) and other central police organizations such as CRPF, CISF, BSF and other UT police forces. Ministry of Home Affairs issues appropriate advisories, shares intelligence inputs, and extends manpower and financial support, guidance and expertise to the State Governments for maintenance of security, peace and harmony without encroaching upon the constitutional rights of the States.

Intelligence

The Home Minister is responsible for coordinating intelligence activities between the various intelligence agencies and ensuring the protection of national security.

Disaster Management

The Home Minister is responsible for coordinating the government's response to natural disasters and other emergencies and ensuring the country's preparedness and readiness to respond to such events.

Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeastern States

The Ministry of Home Affairs is responsible for the administration of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and it also handles the special issues related to the northeastern states of India, which include insurgency and ethnic conflict.

Citizenship and Immigration

The Ministry of Home Affairs is responsible for issues related to citizenship and immigration, including the granting of citizenship, the regulation of foreign citizens within India, and the management of passport and visa services.

Home Affairs and Other issues

The Home Minister is responsible for other issues related to internal affairs, such as the administration of prisons, the management of the Indian Census, and the protection of civil rights.
