The famous sweet of India, cherished and relished by almost every other Indian, Rasagola, found in various sizes, colours, sweetness, and density has found another reason for its admirers to cheer for it.

The Odisha variant of the sweet has been awarded the Geographical Indication tag number 612 on 29th July 2019. The certificate has been registered in the name of The Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited and Utkala Mistanna Byabasayee Samiti (Utkala Sweetmakers Business Body).

The state of Odisha has received its second GI tag with the induction of Rasagola in class 30, with the first being awarded to Kandhamal Haldi. The class 30 products include sweets apart from items such as coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar, rice, tapioca, sago, artificial coffee, flour and preparations made from cereals, bread, pastry and confectionery besides ices, honey, treacle, yeast, baking powder, salt, mustard, vinegar, sauces and spices.

Odisha submitted its claim over the Rasagola after the GI tag was awarded to West Bengal for the “Bangalar Rasogolla” in 2017. The state of Odisha submitted all proof related to the origin and history along with proof of its uniqueness and difference from the Bangalar Rasogolla to the GI Registry, Chennai in March 2018.

The Odisha Rasagola holds a religious significance for the citizens of the state of Odisha. The Rasagola is served as prasad to Lord Jagannath, as part of 'Niladri Bije' rituals when the deities return to their temple following a nine-day visit to their aunt during the Rath Yatra festival at Puri.

The Odisha Small Industries Corporation has hailed this tag as a blessing from Lord Jagannath and claim that this tag will help get global recognition, increasing the reach of the Rasagola to various parts of the world, thereby increasing trade opportunities for the makers of the sweet.
