The 14th meeting of G-20, i.e., 2019 G-20 summit took place during 28-29 June 2019 at the International Exhibition Centre in Osaka, Japan. This was the first G-20 summit that was hosted by Japan. The participating leaders discussed eight themes to ensure sustainable development for all; the themes are- Global Economy, Trade and Investment, Innovation, Environment and Energy, Employment, Women’s Empowerment, Development, and Health. Ten bilateral meetings were held between India and other participating nations like France, Turkey, USA, etc. on the sidelines of the G-20 summit. India, Russia, and China were also expected to hold trilateral meeting besides the trilateral meeting of U.S., Russia, and China.
G-20 stands for the “Group of Twenty” which is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors. In response to the global financial crisis that occurred due to the collapse of the Lehman Brothers in 2008, the first G-20 summit was held in Washington D.C. in 2008. The summit is held annually since 2011 and India will host the summit in 2022. The G-20 members are- Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA, and European Union (E.U.). G-20 presidency is selected from the members of the group for the 1-year term.
