Two new beaches in Lakshadweep- Thundi and Kadmat Beach- have been accorded the international blue flag certification. The two beaches have complied with all the 33 criteria as mandated by the Foundation for Environment Education (FEE) and have entered the coveted list of Blue Beaches, which is an eco-label given to the cleanest beaches in the world.

As of October 2022, the total number of beaches in India with Blue Flag Certification has now reached 12. These 12 Blue beaches are as follows:

1. Shivrajpur - Gujarat 

2. Ghoghla - Diu

3. Kasarkod - Karnataka     

4. Kappad - Kerala

5. Rushikonda - Andhra Pradesh

6. Golden - Odisha

7. Radhanagar - Andaman and Nicobar

About Thundi and Kadmat Beaches

The Thundi Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Lakshadweep where white sand is lined by the turquoise blue water of the lagoon.

Kadmat Beach is famous for water sports. Pearl white sand, blue lagoon waters and a moderate climate are some of the features that attract tourists here.

What is Blue Flag Certification?

Blue Flag is one of the most recognized voluntary awards for beaches, and marinas across the world.

Foundation for Environment Education (FEE) gives Blue Flag Certification to beaches across the world. Beaches have to fulfill and maintain strict environmental, educational, safety-related and access-related 33 criteria to get the certification.

Certification is given to beaches, marinas and sustainable boat tourism operators in FEE member countries.

Blue Flag aims at promoting sustainable tourism via environmental education, environmental protection and other sustainable development practices.

This year, Blue Flag Programme has completed 35 years since it started in 1987. Currently, 48 countries participate in the programme and 5042 beaches, marinas and boats have been certified.

In Spain, the highest number of sites have been awarded Blue Flag certification i.e. 729 (621 beaches, 103 marinas and 5 boats). Spain is followed by Greece with 591 awarded sites.

What is Foundation for Environment Education (FEE)?

FEE is a non-governmental, non-profit largest environmental education organisation promoting sustainable development. It was formed in 1981. It is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. It has currently over 100 members in 81 countries.

It is active in the five programmes. They are Blue Flag, Eco-Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE), Learning about Forests (LEAF) and Green Key International.
