1. National Unity Day 2019
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the National Unity Day is celebrated since 2014. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron man of India, was the first Deputy CM and Home Minister of India. He contributed greatly to the integration of princely states.
Also, on this particular day ‘Run for Unity’ event is organized which is a medium to obtain the goals of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat.’
The Statue of Unity in the Kevadiya of Gujarat is a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
2. Centre took the initiative to present the highest Civilian Award in the name of Sardar Patel
The Central government has decided to present the highest civilian award in the name of Sardar Patel. The awards will be announced today to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.
The awards will be given to recognize the contribution to promote national unity and integrity.
The award comprises of a medal and citation and will be presented by the President of India.
3. Prime Minister of Lebanon Saad Hariri resigns
Owing to the ongoing protest in Lebanon from the past few weeks, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri has resigned. Despite the various reforms introduced by the Lebanese government, the protests continued that crippled the politicians and economy of the country.
4. Shiva Thapa and Pooja Rani storm into the finals of Olympic Test
Indian boxers Shiva Thappa and Pooja Rani have entered the finals of the Olympic Test event in Tokyo in 63 kg and 75 kg category, respectively.
Pooja Rani is a former Asian Games bronze medalist while Shiva Thapa had won 4 medals in Asian Games.
5. OCI cardholders will now be able to apply for National Pension System
Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) can now subscribe to the National Pension System, the benefit enjoyed by the Non-Resident Indians (NRI). The upper age limit to join the NPS is 65 years of age for all (Indian Citizen, Resident, Non-resident, OCI).
Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has allowed OCI to enroll in NPS.
6. Indian Railways launches ‘Operation Dhanush’
Central Railway Zone of Indian Railways has launched ‘Operation Dhanush’ to tackle the dubious acts done by agents during the festive season in e-ticketing.
Under this operation, all the live tickets will be cancelled by IRCTC on the advice of RPF. The operation was held in all the five divisions of Central Railway Zone.
7. India’s two new Union Territories- J&K and Ladakh come into existence
Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019 has come into effect from today, thereby emerges two union territories of India- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The first LG of Ladakh, R K Mathur, and first LG of J&K, Girish Chand Murmu, will take over the responsibility. With this India’s total states and UTs have become 28 and 9, respectively.
8. Indian wrestler Ravinder wins the silver medal in 61 kg category event of UWW U-23 World Championships
India’s Ravinder Singh has to settle for silver in the finals of the 61 kg category event in UWW U-23 World Championships. He was defeated by Kyrgyzstan’s Ulukbek Zholdoshbekov. With this win, Ulukbek becomes the Asian U23 Champion.
9. World Cities Day celebrated every year on 31st October
The day was recognized through a resolution passed in UN General Assembly in 2013. On 31st October 2014, the day was celebrated for the first time.
The aim of the day is to promote the building of sustainable cities and addressing the challenges of urbanization. This year the event will be held in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
The theme for 2019 is “Changing the World: Innovations and a better life for future generations.”
10. Second Assembly of International Solar Alliance going on in India
The Second Assembly of International Solar Alliance (ISA) is underway in New Delhi from 30-31st October 2019. More than 400 representatives from various countries will be attending the meeting.
ISA is an initiative of Indian PM and President of France with 121 countries as prospective members that lie completely or partially between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
