What is G20 - Group of Twenty?
The Group of Twenty (G20) is the major forum for international economic cooperation. It plays a vital role in shaping and strengthening the global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues.
The G20 does not have a permanent secretariat or staff. The G20 presidency rotates annually among the members, which are selected from a different regional group of countries.
Therefore, the 19 member countries are divided into five groups, each consisting of a maximum of four countries. Most groups are formed on a regional basis, meaning countries from the same region are usually placed in the same group.
The European Union is the 20th member, which is not a member of any of these regional groupings. Each year another country from a different group takes over the presidency of the G20.
The G20 Presidency is responsible for bringing together the G20 agenda in consultation with other members and in response to developments in the global economy.
Inception of G20
In 1999, the G20 was founded after the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98. It was formed as an informal forum for finance ministers and central bank governors of the most important industrialized and developing economies to discuss international economic and financial stability.
In the wake of the global economic and financial crises of 2007 and 2009, the G20 was upgraded to the level of heads of state or government.
G20 is headed by a Sherpa, who is the representative of the leader.
