Hyderabad, the capital of the Indian state of Telangana, has been conferred the overall World Green City 2022 award apart from the category awards. Hyderabad is the only Indian city to win World Green City Award.
Hyderabad defeated Paris, Montreal and others to become World Green City
Hyderabad has surpassed famous world cities like Paris, Mexico City, Bogota, Montreal, and Fortaleza in Brazil to win the award.
Hyderabad has won the award in the category ‘Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth’ of the AIPH held in Jeju, South Korea. The award has recognised Telangana’s ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram’ programme which is a large-scale tree-planting program started in the state from 2015-16. The aim of this program is to increase the tree cover in Telangana from 24% to 33% of the total geographical area.
World Green Cities Award
Association Internationale des Producteurs de l’Horticulture (AIPH) instituted this award to recognize best practices in landscaping, and cultivating plants and flowers. The award is given in six categories. The 6 categories are:

- Living Green for Health and Wellbeing
- Living Green for Water
- Living Green for Social Cohesion and
- Living Green for Economic Recovery & Inclusive Growth

About World Green City - Hyderabad
Hyderabad, the City of Pearls, is the capital city of Telangana. It is located along the banks of the Musi river. It is the 4th most populous city as per 2011 census. It is connected to Secunderabad via Hussain Sagar.
It was established in 1951 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah to extend his capital beyond Golconda. It acted as the imperial capital of the Asaf Jahi’s or Nizams from 1769 to 1948.
In 1948, it was annexed by Union of India and after the Reorganisation Act of 1956, it became the capital of Andhra Pradesh. In 2014, after the formation of Telangana, it became the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Hyderabad is listed as a creative city of gastronomy by UNESCO due to its cuisine. Hyderabad was also recognized as 2020 and 2021 Tree City of the World.
