International Day of Literacy is celebrated every year on 8th September since 1967. The day is celebrated to highlight the importance of literacy in an individual’s life and also for the society as a whole. The theme for International Literacy Day 2019 is “Literacy and Multilingualism.” Acceptance of Linguistic diversity in education and literacy development is key to address the literacy challenges.
617 million children and adolescents lack minimum proficiency in reading and mathematics. Also, more than 262 million children and adolescents remain out of school. One in five adults is still not literate (2/3rd of them are women). Therefore, the purpose of the celebration of literacy day is to grab the attention of governments and civil societies in addressing this issue together at each level.
The issue of literacy is also focused upon in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal -4 (SDG-4) that aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
