The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29th August to commemorate Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary. Major Dhyan Chand Singh popularly known as “The Wizard” had won gold medals at the Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936. He scored more than 400 goals in his career and is one of the greatest hockey players in the history of sports. The highest award for lifetime achievement in sports and games in India, Major Dhyan Chand Award is named after him. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1956. After his death, the Indian Postal Department issued stamps on his name.

On this particular day, the President confers National Sports Awards to the sportsperson for their excellent achievements in the field of sports.
