The human heart is a muscular pumping organ the size of which can be compared to that of a fist. The heart has four chambers:
1. Right Atrium: Receives deoxygenated blood from the veins and pumps into the right ventricle.
2. Right Ventricle: Receives blood from the right atrium and pumps the blood to the lungs.
3. Left Atrium: Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it into the left ventricle.
4. Left Ventricle: Receives blood from the left atrium and pumps the oxygenated blood to all parts of the body.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) including coronary artery disease, stroke, and arrhythmia, are the most common cause of premature deaths globally. Risk factors include- unhealthy diet, smoking, physical inactivity, high cholesterol, etc.
29th September is celebrated as World Heart Day to create awareness regarding the rising death tolls due to Cardiovascular diseases (17.9 million deaths globally) and to highlight that controlling risk factors can prevent 80% of the premature deaths due to CVDs.
