India’s 74th Republic Day was celebrated from Kartavya Path in New Delhi on 26 January 2023. Egyptian President Mr. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was the Chief Guest at the Republic Day parade.

The Republic Day parade ceremony began with PM Modi’s visit to the National War Memorial. During the Republic Day celebration, the National Flag was unfurled. This was followed by the National Anthem with a 21-gun salute.

Republic Day 2023 Highlights

For the first time, the 21-gun salute was given with the 105 mm Indian field guns. It replaced the vintage 25-pounder gun.

Key highlights of the 74th Republic Day Parade

  • Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth commanded the parade as Parade Commander.
  • Major General Bhavnish Kumar was the Parade Second-in-Command.
  • The Marching contingent of the Egyptian Armed Forces marched down the Kartavya Path for the first time.
  • Captain Raizada Shaurya Bali led the first contingent in the uniform of the 61 Cavalry, which is the only serving active Horse Cavalry Regiment in the world.
  • Veterans’ Tableau was another key highlight of the parade this year. Its theme was ‘Towards India’s Amrit Kaal with Resolve – A Veterans’ Commitment’.
  • Lieutenant Commander Disha Amrith was the Contingent Commander of the Indian Navy contingent. The marching contingent for the first time consisted of 3 women and 6 Agniveers.
  • The theme of Naval Tableau was ‘Indian Navy – Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive and Future Proof’.
  • Squadron leader Sindhu Reddy led the Indian Air Force contingent.
  • The theme of the Air Force tableau was ‘Indian Air Force Power Beyond Boundaries’.
  • The theme of the DRDO tableau was ‘Securing Nation with Effective Surveillance, Communication and Neutralising Threats’.
  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) marching contingent was led by Deputy Commandant Rohit Singh.

Cultural performance on Republic Day 2023

479 artists were chosen through the nationwide Vande Bharatam dance competition for cultural performance on Republic Day. The theme of the cultural performance was ‘Nari Shakti’ presented by 326 female dancers, supported by 153 male dancers, of the age group of 17-30 years.

Fly Past on Republic Day 2023

It is the grand finale of the Republic Day parade. It involves an air show by 45 aircraft of Indian Air Force, one from the Indian Navy and four helicopters of Indian Army. The concluding Vertical Charlie maneuver was performed by Rafale fighter aircraft.

Military Tattoo & Tribal Dance festival

A Military Tattoo and Tribal Dance festival ‘Aadi-Shaurya - Parv Parakram ka’ was held in New Delhi on January 23 & 24, 2023. This was held as part of Republic Day 2023 Celebrations and to mark the 126th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose (celebrated as Parakram Diwas).

Vande Bharatam 2.0

The second edition of the Vande Bharatam dance competition was organized as part of Republic Day Celebration 2023.

Bharat Parv

It was organised at Gyan Path in front of Red Fort, Delhi from January 26-31, 2023 by the Ministry of Tourism. It showcased Republic Day Tableaux, performances by Military bands, etc.

School Band Performance at National War Memorial (NWM)

An All-India School Band competition was organized. Eight school bands were selected. They performed at the NWM from January 15-22, 2023. Prince Academy of Higher Education, Sikar, Rajasthan was the winner in both girls' and boys' Brass band categories.

Drone Show during Beating Retreat

On January 29, during Beating The Retreat ceremony, the largest drone show in India, including 3,500 domestic drones, was lit up in the nighttime sky over the Raisina hills.

Anamorphic Projection during Beating Retreat

During the Beating the Retreat Ceremony, a 3-D anamorphic projection was organized for the first time.
