Mango Varieties in India
Mango in India is known as the ‘king of fruits’ and referred to as Kalpavriksha (wish-granting tree) in ancient scriptures. Its scientific name is Mangifera indica. Mango is the national fruit of India.
The mango tree is the national tree of Bangladesh.
A single mango can provide up to 40% of the daily dietary fibre. It consists of potassium, beta-carotene and antioxidants.
In India, mangoes are mainly grown in tropical and subtropical regions at an altitude of 1500 m above sea level. The optimum temperature for growing mangoes is around 27 degrees Celsius.
As per IHS Markit data 2020, India is the world’s largest producer of mango. Most of the mangoes produced in India are consumed domestically.
Major mango-growing states in India are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Uttar Pradesh ranks first in mango production with a share of 23.47%.
Leading export varieties of mango from India are Alphonso, Kesar, Totapuri and Banganpalli. Mango exports take place in three forms: fresh mango, mango pulp, and mango slice.
Mangoes are exported to various countries like UAE, Bahrain, UK, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, European Union, USA, Japan and South Korea.
There are about 1000 varieties of mangoes found in India. The Northern/Eastern Indian varieties are usually late bearing compared to Southern and Western Indian varieties.
