Question of The Day04-10-2019

Directions: In the following question, a sentence has been given in Active/ Passive voice. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Passive/ Active voice.

He was singing a beautiful song for his mother.

Answer

Correct Answer : a ) A beautiful song was being sung by him for his mother.

Explanation :

The given sentence is in the active voice. Let us understand the two voices before we answer the question:

  • Active Voice: the subject performs the action expressed by the verb.
  • Passive Voice: the subject receives the action expressed by the verb.

When converting a sentence from active to passive voice, the following rules are used:

  • The places of subject and object are interchanged.
  • The third form of the verb, i.e. past participle, is always used as main verb in the sentences of passive voice.
  • Auxiliary verbs are used in the passive voice as per the tense of the sentence.
  • The word "by" is usually introduced before the subject.

In the above sentence, the subject is, “he”, the verb is, “was singing” and the object is, “his mother”.

Therefore, the correct sentence would be – “A beautiful song was being sung by him for his mother.”

Hence, (A) is the correct answer.

Question of The Day03-10-2019

If the 7th term of an arithmetic progression is 7 and 11th term of the same arithmetic progression is 21 then, what will be the 15th term of the progression?

Answer

Correct Answer : a ) 35

Explanation :

For arithmetic progression, any nth term is identified as

an=a+(n-1)*d

Where, a = 1st term of the progression

an = nth term of the progression

d = is the common difference

According to the question,

7th term of the arithmetic progression is 7

So, a7 = a + 6d = 7…….. (I)

11th term of the arithmetic progression is 21

So, a11 = a + 10d = 21……… (II)

Solving equation (I) and (II) for a and d, we get

a = – 14 and d=7/2

Thus, 15th term of the progression will be

a15 = a + 14d

a15=-14+14*(7/2)=35

Hence, (A) is the correct answer.

Question of The Day02-10-2019

Which of the following movement was the first Satyagraha movement led by Mahatma Gandhi in India?

Answer

Correct Answer : b ) Champaran Satyagraha

Explanation :

In 1915, Gandhiji returned to India at the request of Gopal Krishna Gokhale and took a tour of India to understand the situation of the country and its people. In 1917, Mahatma Gandhi was persuaded by Raj Kumar Shukla to visit Champaran to address the plight of the Indigo cultivators and thus, the first Satyagraha movement began there.

In Champaran, the farmers were forced to grow Indigo (Neel) which being a cash crop requires a large quantity of water and render the soil infertile for growing other crops. The indigo plantation was supposed to be done in 3/20th part of the land under the Tinkathia system. The farmers were provided loans in advance and with increase in demand were forced to increase the production. The cultivators were exploited by the landlords, and the British government was constantly raising the tax even in the situation of famine.

Gandhiji organized protests against the landlords, and finally an agreement was signed to provide compensation to the farmers along with cancellation of revenue hikes and collection until the famine ended. The success of Champaran Satyagraha played an important role in Indian Freedom Struggle.

Hence, (B) is the correct answer.
