Question of The Day08-10-2019

Consider the following statements:

1. The laterite soil develops in the areas of high temperature and heavy rainfall.

2. The humus content in laterite soil is high.

Which of the above-given statements is/are correct?

Answer

Correct Answer : a ) 1 Only

Explanation :

Laterite Soil

Laterite soil is reddish yellow in color due to the presence of oxides of iron and aluminium. The soil has a lower content of Phosphorus, Lime, Potassium, Nitrogen, etc. due to which it lacks fertility. It is formed in the regions of high temperature and heavy rainfall leading to leaching of soil. In India, it is found in parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, etc. Therefore, statement 1 is correct.

The humus content of this soil is low because most of the micro-organisms and decomposers like bacteria get destroyed due to high temperature. Therefore, statement 2 is incorrect.

This soil is very useful in growing tea, coffee, rubber, etc. The soil is an important source for building material.

Hence, (A) is the correct answer.
