The States Reorganization Act of 1956 was a major act to transform the boundaries of Indian states and union territories, arranging them on linguistic lines.

Under the State Reorganization Act, the country was divided into 14 states and 6 union territories which was passed in November 1956.

Dhar Commission was formed in June 1948 and it rejected language as a basis for reorganisation of states.

In 1953, the State Reorganization Commission was formed. It was headed by retired Supreme Court justice Fazal Ali. The other members of this commission were H N Kunzru and K M Panikkar. In 1955, It had submitted its report to reorganize states into 16 states and 3 union territories.
