Vasco da Gama of Portugal sailed around Africa and arrived at Calicut (Western side of India) on 17 May 1498. Currently, Calicut is the name of Kozhikode city in Kerala. Calicut’s Hindu ruler having the title of Zamorin let him in India.

Vasco da Gama is known to have stayed for nearly three months and returned to India again in 1502 AD.
