Question of The Day11-03-2021

A question followed by three statements marked as I, II, and III is given below. You have to decide which of the two conclusion/s is/are necessary to answer the question.

Question: How many mangoes Ravi ate?

Statements:

I. Ravi ate 12 mangoes more than Suresh but 5 mangoes less than Mridul.

II. Shradha eats 2 mangoes more than the difference of mangoes eaten by Ravi and Suresh.

III. Suresh ate 1 mango less than Shradha.

Answer

Correct Answer : d ) All I, II, and III

Explanation :

Considering statement I: Ravi ate 12 mangoes more than Suresh but 5 mangoes less than Mridul.

From the above statement we can only find relation of mangoes eaten by Ravi and Suresh or Ravi and Mridul. But we cannot find the exact number of mangoes eaten by Ravi.

Thus, statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Considering statement II: Shradha eats 2 mangoes more than the difference of mangoes eaten by Ravi and Suresh.

From the above statement we can only find relation of mangoes eaten by Shradha, Ravi and Suresh. But we cannot find the exact number of mangoes eaten by Ravi.

Thus, statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Considering statement III: Suresh ate 1 mango less than Shradha.

From the above statement we can only find relation of mangoes eaten by Shradha and Suresh. But we cannot find the exact number of mangoes eaten by Ravi.

Thus, statement III alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Now, combining statement I, II, III together

Let the number of mangoes eaten by Ravi, Suresh, Mridul, and Shradha be R, Su, M, and S

Now, according to the given statements

R – Su = 12 …. (1)

R = M – 5 …. (2)

S = 2 + (R – Su) … (3)

Su = S – 1 …. (4)

From equation (1) and (3)

S = 2 + 12 = 14

And, from (3) and (4)

Su = 14 – 1

Su = 13

Putting the value of Su in equation (1) we get

R = 12 + 13 = 25 mangoes

Thus, all the statements I, II, III are necessary to answer the question.

Hence, (d) is the correct answer.
