Explanation :

Fifth scorpene class submarine INS Vagir has been commissioned into the Indian Navy. It was commissioned in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. Hari Kumar at Naval Dockyard Mumbai. With the addition of this submarine, Indian Navy now has 16 conventional and 1 nuclear submarine (INS Arihant) in service. 

Vagir was also the name of a Soviet origin Foxtrot class submarine that was commissioned on 1 November 1973 and decommissioned on 7 January 2001. Vagir takes its name from the sand shark, a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean

The sixth and last of scorpene class submarine, INS Vagsheer, is undergoing trials and will be delivered to the Navy in 2024. It is being built by Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

Six scorpene class submarines are being constructed under Project 75 by the MDL with technology transfer from the Naval group of France. The first submarine of this project INS Kalvari was commissioned into the Navy in December 2017. Other submarines are INS Khanderi, INS Karanj and INS Vela.
