After the nationalization of 14 major banks in the year 1969, the National Institute of Bank Management was formed with a small department to overlook the personnel selection. This department was called the Personnel Service Selection unit, which later came to be known as the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) in the year 1984, with Dr. A. S. Deshpande as the founder-director. The IBPS has been an autonomous body since its inception helping various banks, almost 65 now (including Regional Rural Banks), to select the most suitable candidates for the jobs.
