Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurated Mahakal Lok Corridor in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh

On 11 October 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the 900m-long Mahakal Lok corridor in Ujjain which is built at the Mahakaleshwar temple. The first phase of the corridor has been developed for Rs. 351 crores. The total cost of the Mahakal Lok project is Rs 856 crore. The project will be completed in two phases.

The Governor of Madhya Pradesh Mangu Bhai Patel and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, both were present on the occasion.

The PMO said that the project aimed to decongest the entire area and put special emphasis on the conservation and restoration of heritage structures. Under the project, the temple premises will be expanded nearly 7 times.

The Mahakal Corridor consists of 108 pillars depicting Anand Tandav of Lord Shiva and mural walls depicting Shiva Purana stories.

Features of Mahakal Lok Corridor

The corridor will provide basic facilities to the visitors of the Mahakaleshwar temple. It has near about 108 aesthetically ornate pillars which are made of carved sandstones. The pillars depict the Anand Tandav Swaroop- Dance form of Lord Shiva, and 200 statues and murals of Lord Shiva and goddess Shakti. The mural wall along the Mahakal path is based on Shiv Purana stories like the Act of creation, the Birth of Lord Ganesha, the Story of Sati and Daksha, etc.

The Plaza area is spread over 2.5 hectares and is surrounded by a lotus pond that contains the statue of Shiva along with fountains. The whole premise will be monitored 24x7 by Integrated Command and Control Centre with the help of artificial intelligence and surveillance cameras.

Mahakaleshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. The temple is located on the side of the river Shipra.
