National Games 2022 - For the first time, Gujarat hosted the National Games in 2022 from 29 September to 12 October. The games were held after a gap of 7 years. The athletes competed in 36 sports like kabaddi, kho kho, lawn bowls, mallakhamb, wushu, squash, etc. The sporting events of the 36th National Games were organized in six cities of Gujarat — Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar. The 36th National Games were scheduled to take place in Goa in 2020, but due to COVID-19, the games were canceled. The next edition i.e. 37th National Games will be hosted by Goa in October 2023. The government of Goa has given in-principal approval to IOA to host the Games in 2023.

National Games 2022 Medals Tally

The National Games are inspired by the Olympic Games. The first edition of the games was the effort of Dorabji Tata, Dr. A G Noehren, and Harry Crowe Buck to channel the youth’s energy through sporting events. The aim of the games was to pick the national talent for the Olympic Games. The first National Games in undivided India were held in 1924 in Punjab. While the first National Games on the lines of the Olympics were held in 1985 in New Delhi.

Theme of National Games 2022

The theme of the 36th National Games is “Celebrating Unity Through Sports”. The name of the mascot of the 36th National Games is Savaj which means cub. The motto was “Judega India, Jitega India”.

36th National Games Medal Tally

Services, the team representing the Indian Armed Forces, topped the medal tally followed by Maharashtra, Haryana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Kerala with 66 medals, Madhya Pradesh with 66 medals, Uttar Pradesh with 56 medals, Manipur with 50 medals and Punjab with 76 medals were on the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th positions respectively.

At the 35th National Games, Services topped the medal tally with 91 gold, followed by Kerala and Haryana.

  • In boxing, Lovlina Borgohain, Saweety and Shretima Thakur and Ruchita K Rajput won the gold, silver and bronze medal respectively. In the men’s category, Mohemmed Hussam Uddin won gold, Sachin won silver and Aasifali A Saiyad & Lallawmawma won the bronze medal.
  • In the softball game, the men’s title was won by Maharashtra while the women’s title was won by Punjab.
  • In hockey, Karnataka won the men’s hockey gold by defeating Uttar Pradesh.
  • In the men’s football event, West Bengal defeated Kerala by 5-0 to win the title.
  • Harshika Ramchandran from Karnataka won the best female player of the games while Sajan Prakash from Kerala won the Best Male player of the games.

NOTE: Yogasana performances were included for the first time as a sport at the 36th National Games.

The month of October has been a glorious one for Indian Sports as India won the Women's Asia Cup 2022.
