Union Jal Shakti Minister launched Jal Shakti Abhiyan in New Delhi on 1st July 2019 for creating awareness among the masses regarding water conservation and water security. The Phase 1 of the campaign will run during the monsoon season from 1st July, 2019 to 15th September, 2019 and the Phase 2 (for States receiving rainfall from North East retreating monsoon) will commence from 1st October, 2019 to 30th November, 2019. The campaign is a collaborative effort of various ministries and State governments and will be coordinated by Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

The focus of the government is to provide drinking water to every household, therefore, 1592 water stressed blocks have been identified in 256 districts to implement five important water conservation efforts viz. Water conservation and rainwater harvesting, revamping of traditional and other water bodies/tanks, reuse borewell recharge structures, watershed development and intensive afforestation.

The campaign has been launched along the sidelines of the Swacch Bharat Campaign and is expected to bring positive change among the masses for water conservation.
