A Geographical Indication tag, known as GI Tag is a name or sign that is given to certain products that corresponds to a specific geographical location or basically origin of that product. India is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 has come into force with effect from 15 September 2003.
In India, Darjeeling Tea was the first product to receive GI tag in 2004-05. There are more than 300 products from India which have GI tag granted to them.
