Question of The Day26-03-2020

A certain number of persons sit in a straight line. Some of them face towards the north while the rest face towards the south. The number of persons sitting to the left of R is 2 less than the number of persons sitting right to him. R sits facing north. T sits third to the left of S and immediate right of U, who sits at one of the extreme ends. Q also sits immediate right of the person who sits at one of the extreme ends. Two persons sit between R and Q. S don’t sit facing the south.

Correct Answer : a ) 7

Explanation :

Let us analyze the information one by one and solve the puzzle accordingly.

Information: Q sits to the immediate right of the person who sits at one of the extreme ends. Two persons sit between R and Q. The number of persons sitting left of R is 2 less than the number of persons sitting right to him. R sits facing north.

From the above information, there can be two possible cases:

Case 1: Q sitting right of the person who sits at the extreme left end

In this case, there will be 11 persons sitting in the linear arrangement

Case2: Q sitting right of the person who sits at the extreme right end

In this, there will be 7 persons sitting in the linear arrangement

Depicting both the cases

Information: T sits third to the left of S and immediate right of U, who sits at one of the extreme ends.

Case1: According to the above information, we can say that there will no space left for T on the left side of R. Thus, T, S and U will be sitting on the right side of the R.

Case 2: According to the above information, U can sit only at the extreme left end. Thus, accordingly, T will be sitting between U and R. Also, S will be sitting second to the right of R.

Depicting both the possible cases

Information: S don’t sit facing the south.

From the above information, we can say that in case 1 as S is sitting facing south, so case 1 fails.

Thus, the final arrangement will be

From the above figure, we can say that there are 7 persons in the given linear seating arrangement.

Hence, (a) is the correct answer.
