There are two stations A and B, having two parallel rail lines between them. Train X and Train Y travel between the two stations. When the trains travel in the same direction, train X takes 5 minutes to cross train Y. When the trains travel in the opposite direction, it took them 1 minute to cross each other. Find the speed of Train X and Train Y, respectively, if the length of each train is 200m.
Answer
Correct Answer : a ) 4 m/s and 8/3 m/s
Explanation :Let us assume the speeds of train X and train Y are S1 and S2, respectively.
According to the question, each train is 200m long, so both trains have to travel 400m individually to cross each other.
Case I: When trains moving in the same direction
Given, Time = 5 min = 300 sec
Now, Relative speed = S1 – S2
As we know, Distance = Speed x Time
Thus,
300 x (S1 – S2) = 400 …………. (1)
Case II: When trains moving in the opposite direction
Given, Time = 1 min = 60 sec
Now, Relative speed = S1 + S2
As we know, Distance = Speed x Time
Thus,
60 x (S1 + S2) = 400………….. (2)
Solving equation (1) and (2)
We get,
S1 = 4 m/s
S2 = 8/3 m/s
Hence, (A) is the correct answer.
