1. US announces the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi
The US announced the death of the world’s most wanted terrorist Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi during an air raid by the US forces in northwest Syria.
Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi was the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria terrorist movement. ISIS is a Jihadist militant group that aims at establishing Islamic State in Sunni majority areas of Iraq and Syria.
2. State-wide emergency declared in California
A state-wide emergency has been declared in California due to the raging forest fire spreading quickly via wind gusts of 145 km/hr. The Kincade fire has caused great havoc by destroying a large number of houses, including Soda Rock Winery (1869).
3. 29th Ministerial Meeting of the BASIC concludes
The 29th Ministerial Meeting of the BASIC on climate change was held in Beijing on 25th-26th October 2019. The ministers emphasized the need for multilateralism to handle the global challenges like Climate change and the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
BASIC- Brazil, South Africa, India and China is a group of these developing countries that was formed on 28 November 2009. The 28th Meeting was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
4. German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay a visit to India
India and Germany are looking forward to finding new opportunities for cooperation in green urban mobility and Artificial Intelligence. The discussions will be held during the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to India for 5th Biennial Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) on 1st November 2019.
The two leaders will be discussing the matters of mutual interest on the sidelines of the multilateral meeting.
5. Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina urges for early implementation of BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement
On the sidelines of the 18th NAM summit being held in Baku, Sheikh Hasina issued a statement regarding the early implementation of the BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement. Nepal and India have agreed to this proposal.
BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement was signed between Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal in 2015, but the upper house of Bhutan has not ratified the agreement due to environmental concerns owing to heavy vehicle traffic. The agreement will allow the seamless flow of passenger and cargo vehicles in all the four nations.
6. Alberto Fernandez wins Argentina’s presidential election
Alberto Fernandez has won the ongoing presidential election in Argentina. The 60-year-old law professor has secured 47.36% votes defeating Mauricio Macri. While Cristina Kirchner will be the Vice-President of Argentina.
Argentina is a South American country with a federal constitutional republic democracy. Its capital is Buenos Aires, and the currency is Peso.
7. Bestu Varas- Gujarati New Year celebrated across the globe
Gujarati New Year Bestu Varas is celebrated today as, according to the Gujarati Calendar Vikram Samvat, Bestu Varas is celebrated on the first day of Kartik month.
8. Odisha government unveils ‘Odisha-Mo Parivar’ Initiative
The Chief Minister of Odisha has launched ‘Odisha-Mo Parivar’ initiative that aims at protecting the environment and welfare of the Odias. The focus will be on the environment, health care services and assistance to poor people.
9. Gandhinagar declared as first Kerosene free district of Gujarat
Gandhinagar has become the first Kerosene free district of Gujarat. On the occasion, Union Home Minister allotted 1000 LPG connections to the beneficiaries of the district under the Ujjwala Yojana.
Chandigarh was the first city to be declared as kerosene free.
10. Postal ballot option now for disabled and people over 80 years of age
Election Commission of India recommended to allow disabled people and senior citizens above 80 years of age to cast their votes via postal ballot. The Ministry of Law and Justice had therefore amended the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 to extend this facility to the person with disabilities and senior citizens and include them in absentee voter lists. This move will increase the number of voter turnout.
Currently, this facility is available to armed forces and those on poll duties.
11. First-ever Ladakh Literature Festival
First-ever Ladakh Literature Festival will be organized as a 3-day event from 29th- 31st October to celebrate the unique features of Ladakh in the fields of Art, Culture and Literature.
The festival will provide a platform for children, youth and women to participate in various events being organized. Ladakhi films, presentations on History and Archeology of Ladakh, etc. will be showcased during the festival.
12. Indian Duo settles for silver in French Open final
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had to settle for silver as they lost to Indonesian men’s doubles pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo at the French Open Super 750 final in Paris.
It was the first time that an Indian duo has reached the final. Earlier, Partho Ganguli and Vikram Singh had won the French Open in 1983.
