List of National Parks in India
2023-07-18 | Priyanka Chaudhary
A National Park is an area that is strictly reserved for the conservation of wildlife species and their environment. As of January 2023, there are 106 national parks in India which cover 1.35% of the total area of the country. There are different types of protected areas like National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Community reserves, Conservation Reserves and Tiger reserves. The Wildlife Protection Act is an umbrella act for the comprehensive protection and development of wildlife species in India.
National Parks are those protected areas where developmental activities, poaching, hunting, grazing on cultivation, etc. are strictly prohibited. The State can declare an area as the National Park for the protection and conservation of biodiversity via notification. The State government can also fix or alter the boundaries of the National Parks after the prior approval of the National Board of Wildlife (chaired by the Prime Minister).
India’s first national park- Jim Corbett National Park (Uttarakhand) was established in 1936.
