On 18^th November, Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde will take oath as 47^th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will serve as Chief Justice of India till 23^rd April 2021. He has delivered several significant judgments like continuation of ban by Karnataka Government on Mate Mahadevi’s book for outraging religious feelings of Lord Basavanna’s followers.

He also suspended sale of firecrackers in National Capital Region for controlling air pollution and clarified that citizens without Aadhaar card cannot be denied basic services and government subsidies.

Ranjan Gogoi is 46^th CJI since 3^rd October 2018. His term ends on 17^th November 2019. He is the first person from Northeast India, who became Chief Justice of India. He succeeded Dipak Misra, the 45^th Chief Justice of India. H J Kania was first Chief Justice of India.

Under Article 124 of Indian Constitution, President of India appoints the Chief Justice of India. The seniormost judge of the Supreme Court is appointed as the Chief Justice of India. CJI holds office until the age of 65 years.
