Q. Read the sentence to find out whether there is any grammatical error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. If the sentence is correct as it is, mark 'no error' as the answer (Ignore Error of Punctuation, If any).

Not only Ravish, but also his friends was involved with the NGO to help the poor kids.

  1. Not only Ravish, but
  2. Also his friends was
  3. Involved with the NGO
  4. To help the poor kids
  5. No error

Solution:

The error with the phrase, “also his friends was”, is with the use of the singular form of the verb, “was”.

As per the rules of Grammar, “When ‘Not only-but also’ is used to combine two subjects, the verb agrees with the subject closest to it”. According to this rule, the verb (was) should agree with the second subject, “friends”, which is plural. Therefore, the verb should also be plural and “were” should be used in place of “was”.

Hence, B is the correct answer.
