1. World Brain Tumor Day: 8 June

  • World Brain Tumor Day is observed every year on 8 June to raise awareness about brain tumor and educate people about it.
  • On June 8, 2000, the German Brain Tumor Association started the celebration of German Brain Tumor Day.
  • In 2010, the International Brain Tumor Alliance (IBTA) designated 8 June as World Brain Tumor Day.
  • About 40,000 new cases of brain tumor are reported every year in India.
  • A brain tumour develops when cells grow at an abnormal rate, resulting in the formation of a mass of abnormal cells within the brain.
  • Headaches, seizures, vision problems, vomiting, and mental changes are all common symptoms of a brain tumour.
  • A brain tumour can be treated in different ways- surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, steroid treatment, etc.

2. The India-England Test series will now be known as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy.

  • This new title honours cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson.

  • The rebranding was jointly announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
  • The trophy will be unveiled on June 11 at Lord’s.
  • This event will take place during the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa.
  • Tendulkar and Anderson will reveal the trophy together.
  • India and England will start their next WTC cycle with a five-Test series.
  • This series begins on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds.
  • James Anderson retired from international cricket in July 2024. He played 188 Test matches, the most by any fast bowler.
  • He was the first pacer to take over 700 wickets in Test cricket. His bowling was known for precision and late swing.
  • Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2013 after an unmatched career. He is the only player to appear in 200 Test matches.
  • He scored 15,921 Test runs and made 51 centuries. He played international cricket for 24 years.
  • Earlier, the India-England Test series had two different names. In England, it was called the Pataudi Trophy.
  • In India, it was known as the Anthony de Mello Trophy.
  • Now, the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy replaces both names.

3. The development projects unveiled by Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh.

  • On 7 June, various development projects worth crores of rupees were inaugurated, and foundation stones were laid in Sehore by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
  • The minister encouraged citizens to actively participate in development efforts in line with the vision of a developed India by 2047.
  • The arrival of Narmada water to Sehore has been assured soon, with arrangements underway to supply it to fields in Ashta and Ichhawar.
  • Bhopal is being designated a metropolitan city, which is expected to benefit Sehore due to their growing proximity.
  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), 14 lakh houses were approved for the poor to ensure shelter for all eligible poor families in the 2018 Plus list.
  • On 7 June, Mr. Chauhan announced approval for the remaining 785,336 houses.
  • A total of ₹6,262 crore has been allocated to Madhya Pradesh under the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) scheme for the year.
  • He said that currently 1 crore 48 lakh sisters have become lakhpatis in the country.
  • But our efforts will continue to ensure that no sister remains poor.
  • Continuous efforts are being made to increase the number of lakhpati sisters.

4. T. Rabi Shankar appointed part-time member of the 16th Finance Commission.

  • On 7 June, Deputy Governor of RBI, T. Rabi Sankar, has been appointed as a part-time member of the 16th Finance Commission by President Droupadi Murmu.
  • The appointment has been made under Article 280(1) of the Constitution and the Finance Commission Act, 1951.
  • His tenure will continue either until the report is submitted by the commission or until 31st October 2025, whichever is earlier.
  • This appointment follows the resignation of Ajay Narayan Jha, who stepped down for personal reasons.
  • The 16th Finance Commission is chaired by former vice chairman of Niti Aayog Arvind Panagariya, has four members, and is assisted by Secretary Ritvik Pandey, two joint secretaries, and one economic advisor.
  • The 16th Finance Commission was constituted by the government under the chairmanship of Panagariya on December 31, 2023.
  • The panel will submit its report to the President by October 31, 2025.
  • The report will be for a period of five years starting April 1, 2026.
  • The previous 15th Finance Commission, chaired by NK Singh, had recommended that states should be given 41% of the center's divisible tax pool during the five-year period from 2021-22 to 2025-26.

5. An 800-year-old Shiva temple discovered in Melur taluka of Tamil Nadu.

  • An ancient Shiva temple dating back to the later Pandya period has been unearthed in Udampatti village, near Melur.
  • The discovery was made after local children stumbled upon a buried stone structure during play.
  • The temple’s foundation was exposed with the assistance of the Village Administrative Officer and experts.
  • Archaeologist C. Santhalingam, who deciphered the two Tamil inscriptions on the stone base, stated they date back to 1217–1218 CE, during the reign of Maravarman Sundara Pandya.
  • The temple has been identified as ‘Thennavanisvaram’ in the historical village of Attur, as per inscriptions.
  • The carvings on the foundation stone and references in Shilpa Shastra revealed that the temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • The inscriptions document the sale of a waterbody by the Kalavalinadu chieftain Alagaperumal to Nambi Perambala Kuthan alias Kangeyan.
  • The waterbody called Nagankudi was sold for 64 kasu (coins) along with wet and dry lands.
  • Professor P. Devi Arivu Selvam, temple architect and sculpture researcher, confirmed that the inscriptions provided rare socio-economic insights from the period.
  • For historians, these inscriptions reflect the ancient name of Udumpatti, then called Attur, as well as the socio-economic dynamism during the later Pandya period.

6. Carlos Alcaraz secured a historic win over Jannik Sinner in the French Open final.

  • On June 8, Spain's Carlos Alcaraz produced a stunning comeback to defend his French Open title, beating world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy in a thrilling five-set tennis match.
  • With this win, Alcaraz not only won his second Roland Garros title but also his fifth Grand Slam title, remaining undefeated in all five major finals.
  • Earlier, second-seeded Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini won the women’s doubles title by defeating Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic in the final.
  • The 2025 French Open was the 124th edition and held at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, from 25 May to 8 June 2025.

7. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi virtually addressed International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure 2025.

  • This event is being hosted in Europe for the first time.
  • France and its President, H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, have supported the conference.
  • The theme of the conference is ‘Shaping a Resilient Future for Coastal Regions.’
  • The Prime Minister highlighted the vulnerability of coastal regions and islands to natural disasters and climate change.
  • He referred to recent disasters like Cyclone Remal, Hurricane Beryl, Typhoon Yagi, and others.
  • These events underline the urgent need for more resilient infrastructure.
  • Modi shared India’s experiences with past disasters, such as the 1999 super-cyclone and the 2004 tsunami.
  • He emphasized how India rebuilt with resilience after these calamities.
  • India has also helped establish a tsunami warning system that now serves 29 countries.
  • The Prime Minister outlined five key priorities for global disaster resilience.
    • First, integrating disaster resilience into education and training programs.
    • Second, creating a global digital knowledge hub to document best practices.
    • Third, securing innovative financing for developing nations.
    • Fourth, recognizing Small Island Developing States as Large Ocean Countries.
    • Fifth, improving early warning systems and last-mile communication.
  • Modi stressed the importance of a skilled workforce trained in disaster resilience.
  • He also called for a global platform to share lessons learned from disaster recovery.

8. David Beckham is reportedly set to receive a knighthood in King Charles III’s upcoming birthday honours list.

  • He was first nominated in 2011. This followed his outstanding football career, which included 115 appearances for England.

  • He also played for top clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain.
  • The knighthood would make him “Sir David Beckham.”
  • His wife Victoria would then be known as “Lady Beckham.”
  • The honour recognises more than just his achievements in football.
  • Beckham has been involved in major charitable work for many years.
  • He became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2005.
  • In 2015, UNICEF created The David Beckham Fund to protect children and support their rights worldwide.
  • In 2024, Beckham also became an ambassador for The King’s Foundation.
  • This knighthood reflects his wider contributions to society.
  • Beckham is still active in football today. He is a co-owner of Inter Miami CF in the U.S. He also part-owns Salford City FC in England.
  • The official honours list is expected to be announced next week.

9. Magnus Carlsen won the Norway Chess 2025 tournament in Stavanger.

  • This was his seventh time winning the event. He scored a total of 16 points.
  • In the final round, he drew a game against Indian player Arjun Erigaisi.
  • American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana defeated D. Gukesh in the last round.
  • This victory gave Caruana second place with 15.5 points.
  • D. Gukesh finished third with 14.5 points.
  • This matched his performance from the previous year.
  • Arjun Erigaisi ranked fifth out of six players.
  • He placed ahead of Wei Yi from China, who came in last.
  • Hikaru Nakamura from the USA took fourth place.
  • In the women’s section, Anna Muzychuk from Ukraine won the title.
  • Lei Tingjie from China finished second.
  • India’s Koneru Humpy came in third in the women’s event.
  • Norway Chess 2025 was the 13th edition of the annual chess tournament. It took place from 26 May to 6 June 2025.

10. Dr. L. Murugan inaugurated the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) for the Puducherry Legislative Assembly on June 9, 2025.

  • Dr. L. Murugan is the Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs.
  • The inauguration ceremony included the presence of Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan.
  • Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and Speaker Selvam R also attended, along with other MLAs.
  • A test run of NeVA was recently held during the 6th session of the 15th Puducherry Legislative Assembly.
  • Key documents like the Governor’s address and the Chief Minister’s budget speech were uploaded during the trial.
  • Training for MLAs and government department officials has already started.
  • After implementation, the Puducherry Assembly will function as a fully digital and paperless legislature.
  • NeVA is a major digital initiative launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • It is managed by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
  • The goal is to digitize all 37 State and UT legislatures under one unified platform.
  • NeVA promotes the concept of ‘One Nation – One Application.’
  • The project was approved by the Public Investment Board on January 15, 2020.
  • It was allocated a budget of ₹673.94 crore.
  • Funding is centrally sponsored to ensure equal support for all states and union territories.
  • The platform aims to eliminate paper use in legislative work.
  • It will also create a centralized digital archive for all legislative data.
  • NeVA integrates real-time translation powered by AI and machine learning.
  • This feature is developed in collaboration with BHASHINI and MeITY.
  • So far, 28 state legislatures have signed agreements to join the platform.
  • Out of these, 18 have fully transitioned to a digital legislative system.
