  • The vote for the presidency took place in Naypyidaw. The legislature involved in this process is dominated by military-backed members.
  • Ye Win Oo has been appointed as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
  • He replaces Min Aung Hlaing in the army's top post. Min Aung Hlaing had held the position of Commander-in-Chief since 2011.
  • These changes in leadership follow several years of military rule in the aftermath of the coup.
  • During this period, elected leaders were detained, and democratic institutions in Myanmar were significantly weakened or dismantled.

2. ‘School Chalen Hum’ campaign launched to boost enrollment in Madhya Pradesh.

  • The campaign has been conducted over four days from April 1 to April 4, aiming to ensure that every child attends school.
  • The initiative has targeted over 55 districts and more than 50,000 villages across the state to bring children into classrooms.
  • More than 5.6 crore textbooks, workbooks, and bridge courses have been distributed to support learning under the programme.
  • A significant increase of 19.6% in overall school enrollment for the academic year 2025–26 has been recorded.
  • Government schools have witnessed an even higher growth of 32.4%, indicating rising public trust in public education institutions.
  • A zero dropout rate at the primary level has been achieved through collective efforts of teachers, parents, and the education department.
  • Around 5.5 million students have been provided with uniforms, along with bicycles and financial assistance to support education.
  • Nearly 1.94 lakh meritorious students scoring 75% or above have been provided laptops, while ₹250 crore has been allocated for rewarding toppers with scooters.

3. Amid the crisis, the Indian-flagged LPG tanker Green Asha successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz.

  • The Strait of Hormuz was successfully crossed by the India-flagged LPG tanker Green Asha on April 5, 2026, marking a significant development amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
  • A total of 15,400 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas was being carried by the vessel, highlighting its importance for India’s energy requirements.
  • The passage of the tanker was achieved despite the strait being virtually shut by Iran following the U.S. and Israel attack on February 28, which triggered a global oil crisis.
  • It was noted that nearly 90% of India’s LPG imports were earlier routed through this strategic waterway, making its disruption highly critical.
  • The vessel was reported to have departed from Al Rams port in the United Arab Emirates on March 30 and maintained a speed of around 12.8 knots during transit.
  • A careful route close to the Iranian coast was followed, navigating between Larak, Hormuz, and Qeshm islands to ensure safe passage.
  • The tanker, owned by MOL India Private Limited, had been chartered by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited for delivery to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai.
  • It was recorded as the eighth India-flagged LPG carrier to exit the strait, reflecting gradual movement despite adverse conditions.
  • The government had earlier confirmed that another vessel, Green Sanvi carrying 46,650 tonnes of LPG, had also transited successfully with 25 seafarers onboard.

4. Record cargo handling of 915 million tonnes was achieved by major ports in FY 2025-26.

  • A record cargo handling of 915.17 million tonnes was achieved by India’s Major Ports in FY 2025-26, surpassing the annual target of 904 million tonnes.
  • A year-on-year growth of 7.06% was registered, reflecting sustained improvement in efficiency and operational capacity.
  • The achievement was driven by reforms and strategic investments aimed at modernising port infrastructure and logistics systems.
  • The milestone was aligned with the vision of strengthening India’s position as a global maritime leader under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
  • Deendayal Port Authority emerged as the top performer with 160.11 million tonnes, followed by Paradip Port Authority at 156.45 million tonnes and JNPA at 102.01 million tonnes.
  • Significant contributions were also made by ports such as Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Chennai, and New Mangalore, enhancing overall throughput.
  • The highest growth rate was recorded by Mormugao Port Authority at 15.91%, followed by Kolkata Dock System at 14.28% and JNPA at 10.74%.
  • Increased handling of commodities such as coal, crude oil, fertilizers, containers, and POL played a crucial role in this growth.

6. National Maritime Day 2026: 5 April

  • National Maritime Day is celebrated every year on 5 April.
  • This is celebrated to create awareness regarding support to intercontinental commerce and the worldwide economy.
  • This day is being observed since 1964.
  • The first ship SS loyalty, introduced by the Scindia steam navigation company, traveled from Mumbai to the United Kingdom in 5 April 1919.
  • Varuna Award is conferred on this day to recognize the people who made an outstanding contribution to the Indian maritime sector.
  • The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) celebrated the 63rd National Maritime Day with a series of events for the maritime community.
  • The celebration, under the theme “Maritime India – Empowering Progress”, highlighted India's growing maritime power, ongoing reforms and its desire to emerge as a leading global maritime nation.
  • World Maritime Day is observed every year on the Thursday of last week in September.

7. The Bharat Tribes Fest 2026 concluded in New Delhi with a grand closing ceremony.

  • The festival spanned 19 days. During the event, awards were presented to outstanding tribal artisans and vendors.
  • These honors were conferred across ten categories, including pottery, cane and bamboo products, jewelry, culinary items, gifts and miscellaneous goods, metal products, natural products, paintings, textiles, and Van Dhan Vikas Kendras.
  • Sales figures remained exceptionally high throughout the event. More than 150,000 people visited the festival.

  • The festival was organized by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
  • Handicrafts, handloom products, and natural goods were showcased across more than 200 stalls.

  • The project has also developed 'ditch-cum-bund' structures extending approximately 214 kilometers in length.

  • The objective of this exhibition is to provide a large number of people with the opportunity to view this sacred document.
  • This scripture focuses on ethical conduct and spiritual discipline.
  • It comprises 212 verses composed in Sanskrit.
  • These verses encapsulate the essential principles derived from Hindu scriptures.

  • UNGA passed a resolution on 23rd August 2013 to observe 6th April as the ‘International Day of Sport for Development and Peace’.
  • It also commemorates the inauguration of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, Greece.
  • National Sports day is celebrated every year on 29 August in India on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand.
